I am currently captivated by this video:
It is amazing to me that women don’t really know what they look like down below. And then I think about myself. And I don’t really know what I look like down below.
Don’t get me wrong. I know what vaginas look like. I have pictures of them all over my desk because I work at Spicy Gear and I can get away with that. They’re nice pictures– beautiful and anatomical drawings from a pro-vulva movement, and they’re all different shapes and colors and sizes. And I appreciate them for their differences. But I’ve never really looked at nor appreciated mine.
In particular, I love when the woman with the pink hair says that it looks innocent. Given the rough history she told the camera about before– with the boy who said it was ugly– it feels like a nice conclusion and I’m sure it’s given her a giant boost of confidence.
Women are saturated with images about how we’re supposed to look. And it’s not just our clothed bodies either. Mainstream adult films tend to sway towards a particular type of vulva. And those vulvas are beautiful– but so are bigger ones, ones with long labia, thick bushes, darker labia and clitorises, and everything in between.
If part of loving yourself is loving the way you look, go home tonight and take a good look at yourself in the mirror. Not your face, or your hair, or even your butt. Take a peek downstairs and appreciate what you find, especially if you’ve never done it before. It’s an area of your body you use every day (for sex or not). Get to know it.

The idea behind this video is great… I can personally speak for how empowering it is to finally get a good look at what’s going on down there. After being on tumblr for a couple of months (and following some great body & sex positive blogs) I took a few pictures of my own parts. Not only was it… Relieving? But I found out I had a freckle down there! I love freckles, and cherish each of mine, and to see one down there, single handedly gave me a reason to be proud of my bits.
My only complaint with the video is that you refer to the parts between their legs as vagina. Given that it isn’t detailed that they’re looking at the vaginal canal or opening, it’s left to be understood that they’re looking at the external features, which are called vulva. The lips, clip, vaginal opening, hair, etc are parts of the vulva…and given all the misguided information out there, I don’t think it’s appropriate to continue spreading misinformation.
